This love story has been more than twenty years in the making. It has been one of the most challenging, fulfilling, rewarding adventures of my life. And if I had to go through this journey with anyone else, I wouldn’t want to. She is my reason, my motivation, and the prize at the end of the rainbow. It is with her, through her, and because of her that I strive every day to become a better version of myself. Having someone who genuinely wants the best for you changes everything. When you can honestly say, “It’s us against the world,” and truly mean it, then you know you have found someone — and something — worth fighting for.She is my light at the end of the tunnel, my shelter from the rain, and my safe place from the troubles of the world. No matter how hard life gets, loving her gives me peace, purpose, and strength. How It All Started......... It was a warm summer night, the year is 2003, and the air was electric. The scene opens at one of Albany’s most well-known adult meeting spots at the time — the infamous American Legion. Everyone in the club was having a good time that night. The music was pumping, the liquor was flowing, and the usual two-to-one ratio of women to men filled the room with energy. Clusters of women gathered in every corner. Near the DJ booth and the bar danced a beautiful woman, barely five feet tall, who caught my attention from across the room. Like sunshine radiating on a cloudless day, her smile brightened the entire room. To myself, I said, “I got action,” as I made a beeline in her direction. Her back is turned, and his confidence is on 10,000. He approaches her, places his hand gently on her waist, and starts dancing with her. She quickly turns, looking back over her shoulder. With confidence as high as gas prices, he locks eyes with her and says, “Yeah, I pass the cuteness test.” And with that brief interaction, their fates were sealed, and a fairytale romance began. From the very beginning, their courtship was intense. They were inseparable almost instantly; only college and work could keep them apart. Every free moment was spent together, learning each other, loving each other, and building a connection neither of them had ever experienced before. But as strong as their love was, they were still young. Neither truly knew how to communicate their wants, needs, and emotions effectively. Misunderstandings, pride, and immaturity slowly created distance between them, ultimately leading to the downfall of their first attempt at love. The second time around was different… yet somehow exactly the same. The year is now 2009. Neither time nor distance had weakened the passion they shared. If anything, it had only grown stronger. Being together again felt natural — like they had never really been apart at all. The chemistry, the comfort, and the connection instantly returned as though time itself had stood still waiting for them. But if things were complicated before with two strong alpha personalities, adding children into the mix made life even more interesting. Now it wasn’t just about the two of them anymore — it was about blending families, balancing responsibilities, healing old wounds, and figuring out how to love each other while building a home for everyone involved. Still, through all the chaos, one thing never changed: the undeniable pull they had toward one another. No matter what life placed in front of them, they always found themselves coming back together, bound by a love neither of them could fully walk away from. Years passed, but I never stopped thinking about her or longing to be with her again. One day, we crossed paths unexpectedly, and I felt like this was my chance to reconnect — a chance I wasn’t going to waste this time. At the time, I was searching for a place where me and my kids could start fresh. By then, we both had children: I had two young boys, and she had a son of her own. We decided to give love another try. What she didn’t know was that during all those years apart, I had moved just one street over from her on 10th Ave and would intentionally ride past her apartment on 9th Ave, missing her the entire time. To show her how serious and intentional I was about making things work this time, I brought my sons over to meet her and her son. We spent time together taking the boys out to eat, letting them play, or simply staying home cooking meals while the kids laughed and bonded. The boys grew comfortable with one another so naturally that, before long, we slowly began blending our families together. As much as I wanted things to work this time around, I still managed to mess things up, and she didn't hesitate to stop talking to me. It was a decision I would come to regret for the rest of my life — and even to this day, that regret still stays with me. Losing her felt like losing a part of myself. No matter how much time passed, the memories of how she made me feel and of us never faded: the late nights talking, the laughter of our boys playing together, the meals we shared, and the vision I had of us becoming one family. I carried those memories with me everywhere I went. Even after everything fell apart, I never stopped loving her. Deep down, I knew she was someone special — the kind of woman who only comes around once in a lifetime. And although life moved forward, a part of me remained stuck in those moments we shared, wishing I had made different choices before it was too late. A few years had passed, and by then I was married with my third child. Life had moved on, but my feelings for her never truly disappeared. Then one day, I had a near-death experience at work, and in that moment, all I could think about was her. I realized there were things left unsaid — feelings I had carried for years and into my marriage that I could no longer keep bottled up inside. Even though I was living in Ohio, more than eight hours away from Georgia, distance didn’t matter in that moment. Facing the possibility of losing my life made everything clear to me. All the feelings I had buried for years came rushing back to the surface, and I realized there were things I could no longer leave unsaid. I knew I had to call her. I hoped her number was still the same because she was the kind of woman who kept everything — childhood pictures, old gifts, memories from years ago. To this day her phone number is still the same. I knew I should have called my wife and told her about my near-death experience at work. I felt compelled to call the woman who had never truly left my heart. But after all those years apart — after not speaking to or seeing her in so long — the only person my heart wanted to reach for was Mendi. So, I called her. To my surprise, she answered. The only reason she did was because I had changed my number; she had already blocked every other way I had tried to contact her before. Hearing her voice again after all that time felt unreal, almost like no time had passed at all. In that moment, I wasn’t thinking about my wife, pride, fear, or the years between us. I just knew I needed her to know the truth — that despite everything life had brought us through, a part of me had never stopped loving her. I poured out everything I had been holding onto for years and apologized sincerely for how badly I had handled our last chance of being together. I explained what had happened to me at work and told her that, at that terrifying moment, all I could think about was her. But if you know Mendi Warren, then you already know she wasn’t about to let me off easily. She’s the kind of woman who loves deeply, but when she’s hurt, she can become your worst nightmare. And after everything I had put her through, time hadn’t softened that pain. Even though years had passed, forgiveness was still far from her heart. She let me have it from the moment she realized who was on the phone. Every word I had avoided hearing for years finally caught up with me all at once. Before I could say anything else, she hung up the phone — and just like that, I was blocked all over again. As painful as it was, I couldn’t even blame her. Some wounds don’t heal just because time passes. I had broken her trust before, and now I was being forced to sit with the consequences of my own decisions. But even after that call, one thing remained true: no matter how angry she was, no matter how many walls she built between us, my feelings for her never changed. People say the third time’s the charm. This time, we found our way back to each other because of a dream. One night, after more than a decade of silence between us, she dreamed about me and felt compelled to reach out to see how I was doing. She unblocked me from social media, and to my complete shock, I received a message from her on Instagram. For years, I had seen her from a distance — shopping, eating out, living her life — but she never saw me. I would catch glimpses of the woman I never stopped loving and wonder if we would ever speak again. So, when I saw her message, I could hardly believe it was real. At the time, I had just gotten out of the ICU after surgery to remove a tumor from my neck. The surgery had damaged my vocal cords, and I could barely talk, but there was no way I was going to miss the opportunity to reconnect with her again. Even though more than a decade had passed, my feelings for her never changed. If anything, time only made me realize that some people are meant to leave a mark on your soul forever. By now, I already knew the grass wasn’t greener on the other side, and I wasn’t about to ruin my chance at happiness again with the woman I had loved since we were teenagers. I still remember seeing her on Frost Street, back when her mother was so strict she barely allowed her to come outside the fence to play. Even then, there was something about her that stayed with me. I told her everything. I explained that I was going through a divorce, and to my surprise, she told me she was single and living in Maryland. Shortly after the last time we had spoken over a decade ago, she had moved there and built a good life for herself. All I wanted to know was if I still had a chance with us. After many heartfelt apologies, she told me we would see — that my actions and intentions after my divorce would determine everything. This time, I was determined not to make the same mistakes again. I finalized my divorce as quickly as I could and moved to Maryland to be with her. And now, four years after that dream brought us back together, here we are — engaged to be married and sharing our love story with you. What started as a glimpse across a crowded room turned into a love story written over decades — a story filled with second chances, painful lessons, forgiveness, and undeniable love. The dream was never really about perfection; it was about finding our way back home to the love that was always meant for us. And after all the years, all the heartbreak, and all the waiting, we finally understood that our story was never over — it was simply waiting for the right time to begin again.… our happily ever after finally begins.Our happily ever after didn’t start with perfection.It started with hope.It started with forgiveness.It started with a dream. To be in love with Mendi Warren is both one of the greatest and scariest experiences in the universe. Great because a love this deep is rare. Scary because when someone becomes your heart, your home, and your happiness, the thought of ever losing them becomes unimaginable. But after everything we’ve endured — the years apart, the mistakes, the growth, the healing, and the journey back to one another — I know one thing for certain:Some loves are written in destiny long before two people fully understand what they mean to each other. Ours just took over twenty years to become the love story it was always meant to be.
